Sheth Design Studio
Surrounded by the storied charm of Matunga’s Five Gardens and cradled in a canopy of mature rain trees, this 3BHK apartment is a masterclass in balance — between structure and softness, restraint and richness, modernity and memory. Designed by Sheth Design Studio as a private sanctuary high above the bustling city of Mumbai, the home draws its essence from the verdant views that wrap around it, weaving them seamlessly into its materiality and mood.

“As architects, our brief was rooted in clarity: to craft a refined, layered home that speaks in hushed tones, yet reveals thoughtful detail at every turn,” said Kaushik Sheth, Principal Architect. The entryway becomes an overture to that story. A striking black-and-white patterned flooring with subtle brass inlays immediately grounds the space in elegance, while a textured beige wall and soft grey main door set a calm, contemporary palette. A streamlined console in matching tones ties it all together, gently transitioning into the heart of the home.

In the living room, a restrained palette of warm beige and sage green comes alive through tonal layering and tactile finishes. The TV wall — rendered in a custom Santorini texture — adds depth and a whisper of coastal calm. On one side, the dining area is anchored by a sculptural crockery unit; on the other, a lounge zone opens out around a quietly integrated mandir. Patterns are used cleverly here to conceal the door to a bedroom — a design move that prioritizes fluidity without sacrificing function.

The kitchen, finished in pristine white quartz and pastel grey cabinetry, is spatially efficient without feeling utilitarian. A dedicated chopping zone subtly separates prep and cooking areas, maintaining flow while enhancing usability — a rare win in compact urban homes.

The bedrooms, each a reflection of their occupant, maintain visual cohesion while expressing individuality through texture and tone. In the master bedroom, a meditative palette of beige and pastel purple sets the stage for rest. A fabric-finished wallpaper forms a soft, tactile bed-back, while upholstered furnishings echo the room’s calming intent.

The elder son’s room plays with cooler hues — an interplay of blue and light grey that feels crisp yet inviting. A bold blue bed-back becomes the focal point, balanced by a light grey PU wardrobe. The en-suite bathroom takes a bolder turn, clad in tropical tiles and layered patterns — a visual departure that energizes without disrupting the overall narrative.

The younger son’s bedroom continues the bohemian sensibility hinted at in the common areas. Upholstered in sage green, the bed sits against limewash-textured walls, while wardrobes feature bespoke fabric inlays that add a handcrafted charm. The bathroom follows suit with a stone-textured wall, wooden ceiling, and warm floor finishes — an earthy, tactile retreat that feels both rooted and elevated.

Throughout the home, the design language remains consistent — soft curves, thoughtful textures, and a neutral base allow the architecture to breathe. There is no overt bling, no overuse of wood or gloss. Instead, there’s an intentional quietude, one that reflects the lush stillness just beyond the windows.

In a city that rarely slows down, this home offers its inhabitants a rare luxury: the space to pause, to exhale, and to be completely at ease. Like the Five Gardens it overlooks, it is timeless, thoughtful — and entirely its own.
