Bagdogra Airport, located in the western part of Siliguri, North Bengal, serves as a vital gateway to the Eastern Himalayas, connecting travellers to renowned destinations such as Darjeeling, Gangtok, Kalimpong, Kurseong, and Mirik. Functioning as a civil enclave within the Bagdogra Air Force Station, the airport plays a pivotal role in the region’s transportation network, bridging urban and remote areas of India’s northeastern frontier.
Our architectural vision for the Airport prioritizes harmonious coexistence with nature, ensuring that the surrounding environment remains undisturbed while emphasizing a contextually-driven design approach.

The design of Bagdogra Airport embodies a futuristic architectural approach focused on environmental and energy efficiency. The project aspires to achieve Net-Zero carbon emissions by integrating green technologies and eco-friendly features. It incorporates energy-efficient solutions and advanced environmental measures to align with global green building standards.
Given the site’s vulnerability to monsoon-induced flooding, with its location lying 10 meters below the flood line, the project presented unique challenges. The architectural team addressed these challenges through a sophisticated storm water management system. This system incorporates retaining walls, swales, and underground drainage networks designed to handle the four water streams traversing the site. These interventions ensure resilience against flood hazards while maintaining the operational functionality of the airport, irrespective of climatic challenges.
The design of the terminal building draws inspiration from the surrounding natural landscape, including the majestic Kangchenjunga mountain range and the lush tea estates of Darjeeling. The façade, crafted with parametric aluminium fins, mirrors the dynamic topography of the region and serves as a second skin for the terminal structure. This thoughtful integration not only enhances the aesthetic appeal, but also reflects the rich natural heritage of the state, establishing the terminal as an architectural landmark that blends seamlessly with its scenic environment.
