Conserve Consultants works at the design stage to ensure that the building design meets the criteria for natural ventilation without modifying the architecture. It was consultant to REVA University – the first naturally ventilated university in India to achieve LEED Platinum certification

Reva University

Reva University, established in Rukmini Knowledge Park, has the distinction of being the youngest educational institute in the country to have been accorded university status. Located 22 kms from Bangalore Intl’ Airport, the university’s sprawling green campus spread over 35 acres is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure and has one of the largest residential campuses in Karnataka.

LEED Platinum
In India, few projects in the educational sector aspire for a Green Building Certification as compared to other sectors, though the advantages of sustainable practices are much more beneficial for educational institutions.

Conserve Consultants approached the project with the ambition to provide tangible sustainable solutions that would impact the very fabric of the university. It achieved LEED India Platinum certification through a meticulous CertificationPLUS Approach. Features include cross ventilation with provision for fresh air as per ASHRAE/ISHRAE guidelines. Ingress of natural daylight has reduced dependence on artificial light and reduced energy consumption. The roof and wall insulation with high SRI materials has caused reduction of heat island effect on occupants’ health.

About 32% energy savings has been achieved through an energy-efficient building envelope, lighting controls and use of occupancy sensors. Lighting power densities for exterior area fixtures do not exceed 80% of the ASHRAE 90.1-2007 requirements, and that of exterior facade/landscape lighting do not exceed 50% of the referenced ASHRAE Standard recommendations. Interior lighting fixtures are located to maintain the maximum candela output from fixtures near the exterior glazing. The parking area has two electric charging stations and 16% of energy demand is met through on-site renewable energy such as solar PVs.

Reva University Interior100% waste-water treatment. Water consumption reduced up to 54% 76% of rainwater harvested at site. 100% of roofs covered with reflective tiles. Reduced exterior lighting power density is 56%

Use of native and drought tolerant plants and drip irrigation have reduced potable water consumption for landscaping. Almost 100% of wastewater is treated onsite with tertiary standards through a sewage treatment plant. The recycled STP water is used for more than 50% of cooling tower water requirements. High efficiency fixtures such as ultra-flow water closets, sensor-based urinals and taps reduce freshwater demand.
