Shadeflex Executes Atrium Roof for Mantri Square Mall

The atrium roof of India's largest mall 'Mantri Square Mall' in Bangalore is made up of tensile membrane. These membranes are of light weight and flexible and can span attractively over large distances.

The use and applications of structural fabric as a building element gives designers and architects an unequalled and almost unlimited aesthetic potential. Together with being lightweight, elegant and translucent, tensile membrane structures are durable and often very economical.

Designed by Bentel and executed by Shadeflex, the roof of Mantri Square Mall sprawl over an area of 60,000 sft. The length of atrium roof is 135 metres-18 large span structures spread over 45 metres. One of the specialties of this world-class project is its roof which is made up of tensile membranes- translucent and opaque membrane and also of laminated tempered/toughened glass.

The entire roof work of the mall is made of individually secured truss work and is not interconnected. Each truss is consisting of two bent steel tubes of hollow section supported by tensioned structural cables and tension rods. The entire roof structure is flashed to the vertical façade with flaps. At night, the translucent membranes are lit up sequentially in various colors giving an ethereal look adding to its enchantment. During the day, sunlight filtering in through the translucent membranes gives it a beautiful glow.

The entire detailed engineering as well as the installation was the commendable feat in the project. As due to non-reach of the crane to most of the roof area, the finished steel trusses were assembled to one side of the building and then shifted to positions with the help of rails.
