From Square Footage to Experience: The New Indian Luxury Home

The Arch Essence Exterior Facade
According to Ar. Rajkumar Kumawat, Founder and Principal Architect of Rajkumar Architects, the understanding of luxury has expanded beyond visual appeal. Homeowners now expect spaces that support their lifestyles while offering comfort, privacy and flexibility.

Luxury residential architecture in India is increasingly being defined by the experience a home provides rather than its size or material value. While generous spaces and premium finishes remain relevant, homeowners are paying greater attention to how their homes accommodate everyday routines, personal interests, family interactions and changing requirements.

The Arch Essence, an 8,800 sq. ft. residence designed by Rajkumar Architects in Jaipur, demonstrates how these priorities can influence residential planning. Developed as a multilevel home, the project accommodates individual activities, family gatherings and recreational spaces within a connected residential environment.

One of the important considerations in contemporary luxury homes is how different activities are accommodated without compromising privacy or movement. At The Arch Essence, the basement includes a music room, while the ground floor incorporates a drawing room, play area and spa. The upper levels accommodate family living spaces, private bedrooms and a home theatre, allowing residents to use different parts of the house according to their daily needs.

Natural light and openness are equally important in shaping the residential experience. The residence uses a double-height dining area, balconies and landscaped spaces to establish connections between different parts of the home. Its layered balconies and curved architectural elements also create shaded outdoor extensions, making these spaces more useful throughout the day.

Material selection contributes to the experience of a luxury home, particularly when it creates a consistent environment rather than drawing attention to individual decorative elements. Soft beige tones, fluted surfaces, grooves and coordinated furnishings establish a common design language. Carefully positioned artwork, decorative screens and wall panelling add character while maintaining consistency across the interiors.

The relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces is another consideration in contemporary residential architecture. The landscaped terrace incorporates a synthetic lawn, built-in planters and a sculptural feature that helps distinguish areas intended for relaxation. Such spaces provide residents with additional opportunities to spend time outside conventional living rooms and bedrooms.

Accessibility and circulation also influence how comfortably a large residence functions. The integration of a staircase and lift across the multiple levels allows residents to move between private, shared and recreational areas with greater convenience.

For Rajkumar Kumawat, the shift in residential luxury is ultimately about making architectural decisions that remain relevant to the people occupying a home. "The value of a luxury home should not be measured only by its size or finishes. What matters is how comfortably the spaces accommodate everyday living, respond to individual requirements and continue to support the family as its needs evolve."

Luxury is increasingly associated with the quality of everyday experiences, where thoughtful planning, functional spaces and personal comfort carry as much importance as scale.
