This modern rooftop office exudes opulence and class. Dark colours, plush upholstery, and ornate decor welcome clients at the reception. Crystal chandeliers add an elegant touch to the lounge and the imposing colour palette of black and blue allows the heavy wooden paneling to stand out. Internally, the layout has been reconfigured and aligned for more successful flow, with vertical circulation and linear pathways to reinforce a sense of discretion and privacy.
The pandemic has made organizations question their assumptions about how work should be done and the role of the workplace. With every company coming to a different conclusion, it falls on us as architects to understand the needs of every individual workspace and cater to their requirements. Further, with the end of the pandemic nowhere in sight, new solutions need to be explored to make employers and employees feel safer in their offices.

The first major solution is office arrangements and layouts that allow for appropriate social distancing. Further, open floor plans will continue to dominate the industry as they are easier to clean and limit the number of surfaces that can harbour bacteria. Another way that architects have had to adapt their practices to creating workspaces post pandemic has been to explore new materials and finishes for everything from cabinets to floors to desks to ensure they can be easily sanitized.

As architects, it is imperative that we continue to challenge our own assumptions about the workspace and continue to innovate new solutions for our clients.

The reception gives way to the main open workspace with its linear walkways. Biophilic design interventions bring a breath of fresh air to the interior spaces. Planters line the desks; large windows direct the gaze towards the terrace, and beyond it, to the sweeping views of the city’s skyline. Natural light floods the office through extensive glazing, creating an uplifting environment, and minimizing the need for artificial lights.

The terrace is accessible from every part of the office. Lined with planters and large Champa trees, the arrangement establishes a strong connection with nature amidst the bustling city. The ergonomic layout of the workspace, oriented around the terrace, provides definition while retaining a feeling of transparency and openness.

Against the glazing overlooking the terrace are multiple lounges, interspersed by phone booths for private conversations. The linearity of the walkways between the open workspace is mirrored by the acoustical fins mounted on the ceiling, dampening the ambient sounds, and adding another layer of privacy to the interiors.

A private hallway leads to the director’s room with its generous use of heavy wood paneling and textured leather, while the angled floor-to-ceiling windows maximize natural light and offer impressive views of the skyscrapers surrounding the building. The mixture of organic materials and decorative elements, like the crystal chandeliers and antique mirrors add allure.
