Smart cities—Japanese way of doing things

When Japanese electronics major Panasonic shut down its old factory, the authorities considered an innovative way of utilizing space by building a smart town in its place and adding to over 600 smart cities in the world with this unit. The 19 hectares smart town opened up for the residents in spring 2014. Its aim was to reduce carbon emissions as well as water and energy, offering locals, energy for self consumption, CCTV surveillance, and eco–friendly mobility. Each house has a solar power generation system and storage battery units with option to sell surplus energy to the grid. The township aims to house 1,000 households of which over 200 have already moved in. The entire project, slated for completion will offer 600 detached houses.
