Tata BlueScope Steel recently bagged a prestigious project from one of India’s premier educational institutes – DY Patil University in Navi Mumbai; what was the main requirement of the University?
As part of DY Patil’s expansion plan, the university’s top management wanted to construct new hostel buildings, spread across three phases. This would have helped them in extending their residential facilities for the increasing number of student admissions.

Their main requirement was construction of a complex overhanging structure with a quick turnaround time. We supplied and installed over 42,000 sq.m area of decking sheets, enabling a robust foundation.

What was recommended by Tata BlueScope Steel and why?
After a thorough evaluation of various parameters based on the site conditions such as load carrying capacities, fire ratings, and joist spacings, we recommended LYSAGHT SMARTDEK® 51 of 1.2 mm BMT for a slab thickness of 150 mm.

LYSAGHT SMARTDEK® 51 not only provides a permanent formwork with minimal propping, but also works as a composite slab with reduced self-weight due to concrete displacement. SMARTDEK®51 has excellent spanning capacities with greater strength and less deflection. It is a complete structural steel decking system for concrete, masonry or steel frame construction. What were the challenges faced by Tata BlueScope Steel in delivering the project and what steps were taken to address the issues?
A project of such a big scale required adequate design planning for enabling its structural stability. LYSAGHT SMARTDEK® 51 assured an extra edge due to its specialised software that provides design optimisation with assured performance. Since the turnaround time was the most critical requirement, it was a challenge to live up to customer expectations. Just-in-time process along with a dedicated team of LYSAGHT® engineers, enabled swiftness in material supply as per project requirements.

Also sorting of materials floor-wise efficiently, was a crucial consideration. We understood the floor and area-wise plan for laying decking sheets and applied demarcated codes. This alternate thinking helped customer segregate material sections floor-wise, with convenience and resulted in timely project delivery with speedy construction.

How does LYSAGHT SMARTDEK® 51 provide more value as compared to conventional slabs?
LYSAGHT SMARTDEK® acts as an integral structural element compared to its conventional counterparts. Its embossments provide a permanent mechanical interlock between steel and concrete. It saves concrete usage due to SMARTDEK® sheet structure and acts as a bottom tensile reinforcement, replacing steel. The high tensile steel provides large unpropped spans, unlike conventional slabs, that require complex prop arrangements.

How did the customer perceive value through your solution?
Our construction and engineering capabilities not only fulfilled DY Patil University’s project requirements, but also ensured adherence to expected timelines. Right from the mock-up stage, the customer was thoroughly impressed with the timely efforts taken to build the prototype. Overall, SMARTDEK® 51 has proven itself as the most suitable alternative for conventional reinforcement materials, especially in high-rise building projects, such as the DY Patil’s hostel premises.
