CII-IGBC
CII-IGBC, India’s premier body for green building certification and related services, is participating in Green Building Week from 9-13 September 2024. The 2024 campaign, #BuildingTheTransition, urges the building and construction sector to adopt three key steps for a resilient and zero-carbon future: reduce, electrify, and adapt.

Supported by over 75 Green Building Councils (GBCs) and partners, this annual campaign will host more than 100 events worldwide to highlight solutions for a resilient and decarbonized built environment. REDUCE focuses on improving energy efficiency and minimizing energy use; ELECTRIFY advocates for the shift to electricity for essential functions, ensuring that electricity generation comes from low-carbon sources such as renewables; ADAPT emphasizes the need for the built environment to withstand the impacts of climate change.

During the inauguration of Green Building Week, B Thiagarajan, National Chairman of CII-IGBC, stated, “Green Building Week is a global initiative by the World Green Building Council. The Indian Green Building Council is committed to Building the Transition along with our stakeholders—developers, builders, architects. Together, aligned with WorldGBC's mission, we are playing a constructive role in creating built environments that are sustainable and resilient to climate change.”

Now in its 16th year, World Green Building Week is led by WorldGBC and its global network of GBCs, with over 46,000 members and international industry leaders working to build momentum and drive local actions necessary for people and the planet to thrive. GBCs, present in over 75 countries, represent 60% of the world’s building stock and 65% of global GDP, covering 72% of global built environment emissions.

The Indian Green Building Council, an active part of the World Green Building Council, is conducting a series of events during Green Building Week to promote environmental sustainability in construction and building sectors. These events include a national webinar series on climate change solutions, waste management sessions in partnership with Eastern Railways, and the launch of IGBC student chapters in Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mysuru, and Bengaluru to inspire young minds to integrate traditional and modern architectural designs for a sustainable future.

C Shekar Reddy, National Vice Chairman of IGBC, remarked at the event, “Green Building Week is a vital global movement that promotes sustainable infrastructure and buildings, which minimize environmental impact and enhance the quality of life for occupants. Through various initiatives, IGBC and its partners aim to encourage responsible and sustainable development practices that balance human needs with environmental stewardship.”

IGBC supports innovation in building technologies, materials, and design practices that align with net zero goals. It promotes research and development in sustainable building solutions and technologies and fosters collaboration among industry experts, government bodies, and academic institutions. This collaborative approach facilitates sharing knowledge, experiences, and solutions related to net zero buildings.

CII-IGBC’s Mission on Net Zero aims to achieve 100% net zero embodied carbon by 2050 for new buildings and infrastructure while working towards making all buildings, including existing ones, net zero operational carbon. Its Net Zero Carbon Rating System encourages the use of low-embodied carbon materials and technologies, on-site or off-site renewable energy sources, and adherence to Whole Building Life Cycle Analysis. The rating system covers both 'Design & Construction' and 'Operations' phases, allowing for tailored strategies to minimize or eliminate carbon emissions at different project stages.

The Net Zero Energy, Water, Waste, and Carbon rating systems offer an excellent opportunity for the Navi Mumbai building sector to lead the adoption of net zero practices and help transform India into one of the leading countries achieving Net Zero by 2070.
