By their nature, green practices are not at cross purposes to good design - which is after all, good business. Yet India’s progress in adopting green practices and promoting eco-friendliness is relatively behind that of other countries. The primary challenge to this is India’s slow pace of modernization and the poor positioning of the design industry in the decision making process that impacts program development in buildings, costs and adoption of practices in the construction industry. To become meaningful to users, by definition, ideas around eco-friendliness must not only embrace technology and energy considerations, but also social, visual, spatial, temporal, landscape, and symbolic sensibilities. Indian design is highly capable of achieving these values, provided promoters adopt the appropriate product development framework.

Design Atelier Architects green project Chimes in Gurgaon is very special to us as it epitomises so many dimensions of what green building should be beyond energy efficiency and good construction practices outlined via the LEED Gold rating it has received, and the awards it has won. The design of the building emphasises sociability among people and environment-diversity of all kinds: juxtapositions of people, functions, built forms, spaces, and activities, are just some of the fundamental elements that help encourage an inclusive and sustainable public sphere that thrives at all times of the day and night.
