LEDs: Solutions For Today & Tomorrow

LED light technology is enabling designers to explore unique interior lighting concepts, given that the lighting controls can be used to control many aspects in an LED strip. The fact that LEDs also offer the most energy-efficient lighting solutions, and that their compact and small size enables their application in almost any inaccessible place, is making them the preferred choice over other lamp types.

Su-Kam: Sustainable solutions

Su-Kam Power Systems Limited, a leading player in the power back-up solutions provider in India, has entered into a MoU with Fiem Industries Ltd. to offer innovative LED lighting products. The expanded product portfolio now covers a wide range of LED lighting products designed to meet the requirements of architects, interior designers, town planners, engineers, builders, contractors, etc. These include Flame Bulb, Blaze Bulb, Inverter Bulb, Rainbow Bulb, Candle Bulb, Deco Bulb, Blaze Money Saver Bulb, Filament Bulb, Blaze 3-in-1 Bulb, Retro T8 Tube Light, Square T8 Tube Light with Integrated Strip, etc.

Kartik Sachdev, Marketing Head- Solar, Su-Kam, said, "Under our strategic partnership with Fiem, which is a leading manufacturer of automotive lighting, signaling equipment, and LED lighting solutions, we will establish a 50:50 JVC called Su-Kam Fiem in India. While the JV will leverage Fiem's technical expertise in manufacturing, we will bring on board our vast network of sales for the purpose of selling and marketing LED lighting products, which will be manufactured by Fiem under the joint brand." Both the companies have agreed to synergize their existing capabilities to work jointly. The management of Fiem Industries envisages that this will be a strategic marketing venture as nationwide distribution network of Su-Kam will be available for its LED Lighting products.

Anchor Electricals: Bridging the energy deficit

Anchor Electricals (a Panasonic Group company) is on an aggressive expansion plan for its Panasonic LEDs. It has recently extended its range to cater to the Hospitality, Industrial and Outdoor segments, and plans to add 415 new LED products. The company already has an established Trade and Commercial LED luminaires portfolio.


Its latest Neue Archi range of specialty architectural luminaires has been designed keeping in mind the operating conditions in India. The range is equipped with advanced thermal management technology, specially designed transparent thermoplastic diffuser, robust housing, high UV and corrosion resistance properties. The company's Commercial and Hospitality luminaires have an operational life of 50,000 burning hours, high surge protection of 2.5KV, wide voltage operating range from 80-330V, robust housing, and energy-efficient electronic drivers. The Industrial luminaires have advanced ingress protection (IP protection), High Power Factor, and Surge Protection of 4KV that prevents luminaire failure in case of voltage surge.

According to Dinesh Aggarwal, Joint Managing Director, Anchor Electricals, the Indian lighting industry is a Rs.16,000 crore market, and the current regulatory landscape has created a robust demand for LED lighting. "While the LED market is growing at 130% annually, we expect an overall growth of 115% of the lighting market. The industry is undergoing a huge transformation with support from the government and statutory bodies, with a wide basket of products for assorted spaces to the sophisticated movement detecting lighting systems. Abdullah Lighting Systems: Bringing customized solutions

Delhi-based Abdullah Lighting Systems (ALS) has expanded its range of LEDs as well as its market reach, having tapped newer markets like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telengana, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa, and Nagaland, in the past one year. Products include LED lamps for gardens, streets, commercial buildings, residential complexes, hotel industry, etc.

Md. Rafi, CEO, ALS, says, "In garden lights alone we have over 900 variants, and our latest brand, XperiaTM Lights, caters to both outdoor indoor lighting needs. Increasing application of LED-based lighting is driving growth. The solid state lighting technology has opened up numerous opportunities by enabling compact and customized lighting solutions, which were not possible with conventional lamps like the incandescent bulbs and CFLs. Further, government incentives by way of excise benefits to LED light manufacturers and LED-based solar lighting systems for street light applications, are also opening up the market for LED lighting solutions."

The company's assembling unit in IP Industrial Area, Delhi, is equipped with high-tech machines, cutting edge technology, latest design software and equipment. "All our products offer a 3-year warranty. We use LED chips from Osram and Edison Opto, and lenses from LED Link, while PCBs and drivers are sourced from Indian makers," informs Rafi.

Rafi warns against using cheap imports from China that are sold without any guarantee and do not last long, and also sourcing from small manufacturers who do not have a technical understanding of LEDs. "Heat management and use of the right electronics is important for optimum performance of LEDs. A poorly designed LED lighting product can lead to faster overheating, faster lumen depreciation, light discoloration, and a much shorter life of the lamp."

He informs that to its customers and that demand for customization has increased significantly given the flexibility of LEDs. "Until recently, LEDs were limited to single bulb use in applications such as instrument panels, electronics, pen lights, etc, and more recently as strings of indoor and outdoor Christmas lights. Now, manufacturers have expanded their application by using them for general purpose lighting such as downlights and as replacement for CFLs, T5/T8 ceiling lights, etc. LEDs are being encased in diffuser lenses which spread the light in wider beams. We get a lot of enquiries from hotels, residences, etc, for unique LED applications and architects and interior designers are constantly coming up with unusual lighting designs."
