There is rising awareness in the way buildings are being designed. Sustainable and energy-efficient buildings are the need of the hour. As there is still some ambiguity in terms of the certifica-tion and definition of eco-friendly structures, there is a lot of responsibility left on the architect, consultants, and the developer. The reason for creating energy-efficient and eco-friendly buildings, needs to be clearly identified. It is an absolutely essential and integral scope that has to be considered right from the initial conceptualisation of the project. The challenge still seems to be that ‘eco-friendly’ is an elitist term and could mean that the building is either a bit more expensive to build or compromises may need to be made to the concept or initial premise of the project. Personally, we feel that we need to imbibe the values of building efficient buildings in response to the environment around us; this helps in creating architecture that is unique and relevant.

We have been keenly following the progress of the new Apple Headquarters and Campus by Norman Foster. The premise and the concept of the project has evolved from a very simplistic and clear vision and knowing the capabilities and resources of Apple as a company and Norman Foster Architects as a firm, the end product will be truly inspirational. The excitement surrounding the building also clearly shows that ‘sustainable architecture’ can be ‘spectacular architecture’.
