Covestro has developed unique Polyisocyurate (PIR) based prefab dry wall system panels for construction of internal/external partitions and roofing solutions in housing structures

In today’s lifestyle, there has been a radical shift in the living pattern of people due to rapidly growing technologies and innovations. These technologies have opened many doors of opportunities for almost all the industries to explore new avenues and gain some solid momentum. Conscientious builders and designers are conceptualizing different unique ideas for construction and interior design options with a thrust on sustainability from design to execution.

Covestro Inclusive Business tries to bring about a sustainable social transformation through projects that require us to reimagine the way we look at some of the most important challenges the world is facing currently and the Indian subcontinent, in particular. The projects are in alignment to the core principle of meeting and going beyond the triple P bottom line, namely, People, Planet, and Profit. One such innovative solution that we offer is Polyisocyurate (PIR) Technology.

Polyisocyurate (PIR) based prefab dry wall system panels

PIR Dry Wall Panel is a system where two fibre cement boards (FCB) of 10 mm thickness are filled with insulation material namely Poly Isocyanurate (PIR) in-situ and erected to produce finished walls. The system is integrated with conventional column and beam or steel for pre-engineered buildings. Insulation core provides effective insulation and strong bonding for better structural stability to facilitate higher loading and wider spans. For roof slab two PPGI (pre-painted galvanized iron) sheets of 0.5mm thickness are filled with Poly Isocyanurate (PIR). This system can incorporate all types of services viz. electrical, gas and plumbing, etc.

This system is supported and guided by Covestro. It provides raw materials for production of fibre cement board and PPGI (pre-painted galvanized iron) sheets and technology support to the panel manufacturer. The panel manufacturer adopts technology and manufactures PIR technology-based drywall panel system.

PIR Drywall Technology holds a list of advantages such as Low Carbon footprint and low material consumption which have a significant reduction in cement, sand, steel and water requirements to construct a structure as compared to conventional technology. Even the high level of thermal insulation promotes energy efficiency of the built environment. Other than this, there are more benefits like reduction in labour and lifecycle cost of construction, reduction in noise, air, soil and water pollution during the life cycle of the project, providing soundproof interior spaces and alignment with Industrialized Building Systems (IBS) etc. Because of this system housing facilities are offered at an affordable price for the underserved communities as compared to IGBC Platinum standards.

PIR Panels provide high resistance to fire, water and wind, and absorb zero moisture. Also, PIR Panels provide very high thermal insulation, having K-factor = 0.02 with high compressive strength and at the same time environmentally friendly, clean and speedy construction. With such ingenuous construction, Covestro is indeed providing the best technology at affordable cost.

The PIR Dry Walls are used as non-load bearing walls and as a roof slab for single storey non-accessible structure for buildings including apartments, villas, low-rise buildings, commercial complexes, hotels and industrial buildings.

Covestro has already installed its Drywall panel-based solution in the sanitation space in India like Puducherry, Silvasa and Mangaon (Maharashtra). It has also built Ground +3 level structure as a pilot project in Rajasthan along with Rajasthan State Housing Board (RHB). Other than this, Covestro has planned for deployment of PIR Dry Wall based affordable housing units in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Telengana and Tamil Nadu.

Covestro’s PIR Dry Wall Technology is certified by the Building Materials Technology Promotion Council (BMTPC), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA). The certification of BMTPC has added value and acceptability for our solutions within the local community with government agencies in India, and has opened up doors for deployment of our solutions in the affordable housing and sanitations sectors.
