Located near the Chadraka Forest in Odisha, on a 5200 sq ft plot, the residence exudes an ambiance of warm familial intimacy. Ar. Prateek Gupta sought to circumscribe the core concept of this abode around the popular format of ‘form follows function’. The systematic procedure thus involved, primarily allocating the requisite of each area, before focusing on intricacies including the muted colour palette and furnishings. In his own words: “Owing to the climatic conditions of Bhubaneshwar, a courtyard design was a practical yet aesthetic decision, established in the initial days itself. Post deciding on the ‘functional’ crux around which all spaces would be arrayed, the design team formulated the other inventive lanes connecting to this concept.”

In the language of design, while an architect’s studio reflects the creative psyche of the principal, the residence mirrors the innate homely perspective that the architect possesses

The residents, being connoisseurs of the Art Deco style prevalent in colonial Kolkata, sought a home that portrayed ornate columns and detailed chic patterns. The inception of this design can be observed from the artful conception of the façade that showcases simplistic iron grill patterns replicated in the boundary wall and elevation.

Enveloping lawns and a landscaped garden merge seamlessly with the facade, suggesting interiors that present a mélange of the contemporary and the traditional. An entrance lobby, topped with a glass roof, connects the primary spaces, while allowing the infiltration of natural light at daytime and views of the stars at night.

The main door flaunts a classic wooden texture against an exposed brick wall in white, instilling a charm reminiscent of the olden days. The drawing room has analogous tones as utilised in the lobby, and also houses an accentuating wall niche. Sprinkles of green lead the way to the other end of the lobby; housing a dining composition that overlooks a pool. Leading to the more private sectors, the upper level of a double-heighted stairwell, provides a magnified view of the natural terrain through the sloping glass roof.
