Designers are allocating a good amount of space to bathrooms to make room for the many activities, including a seating arrangement, and a refreshing ambience by bringing in nature and interesting artworks to accentuate the space. According to them, artworks add personality and colour to bathrooms.
Rich marbles are still the most coveted option for wall cladding and flooring, as they add a luxurious touch unmatched by any other material. Tiles that mimic the look of marble or stone are also popular. There is a wide variety of tiles available in a wide range of colours and patterns – from geometrics to florals and from ceramic to the stronger porcelain, with anti-skid matte or textured surfaces. Glass tiles are appealing when applied on walls, as are mirrors, veneers and wallpapers.
“Neutral colour scheme with a contrasting note offers the best look when using natural stones, while ceramic and porcelain tiles will allow for a colour scheme of your choice. You can also bring in colour through wallpapers,” says Monica. “With a wide range of options available in sanitaryware and faucets, budget will determine what make you want to go for. It also depends on the design scheme that you have in mind. Keep in mind that graceful forms and clean lines always have maximum appeal and complement any space.”
As in with any space, the right lighting will create the desired ambience. Chandeliers, cove lighting, hidden lighting, candles are popular. “Lighting that gives out a soft illumination… you need many layers to evoke a spa-like environment.” She advises that for a rejuvenating environment you must take care of the air quality through a good ventilation system. “Create an airy and light-filled space by keeping the design minimum, with large windows, and bring in potted plants to add a naturally refreshing note.”
The bathrooms are designed by her as places of wellness and are, therefore, conceived using the most luxurious materials and modern amenities, and has even equipped some with beautifully designed walk-in closets. Natural grains of exotic stones, sparkling surfaces balanced with wood tones, glass and painted walls, sleek accent lights and artworks accentuate the spaces.

Patterns that create a 3D illusion, textural play and classic features evoke an old-world charm.
Uniform stone cladding for flooring and walls lends a clean, seamless look. Organically shaped basin and basins with gold finish, louvered doors of the vanities, stark inlay work to break the monotony of richly veined exotic stone cladding, etc are the design elements that draw attention.

In her latest collection, of highly refined bathrooms, Aparna who believes in minimal designs and who excels in using monotones to great effect, uses a predominantly white palette. The pared-back tone results in maximum appeal as she plays with striking accents and contrasts to add interest, while also highlighting the natural beauty of the stones employed.
An all-white bathroom conceived in clean lines plays up the rich veins of the marble used, while a compact black and white theme captivates with its starkness.
