CII has recently launched 'GreenPro'- Green Product Certification for India. As part of this initiative, CII has inked an MoU with UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global independent safety science company, dedicated to promoting safe living and working environments.

UL will be the Knowledge Partner with CII for offering GreenPro Services in the country.

'GreenPro' adopts a holistic cradle to cradle approach in assessing products that include- design, raw materials, manufacturing process, performance during use, recycle & reuse at the end of the product life. Green Pro Certification will help manufacturers to position their products as green and eco-friendly.

Thus far, in assessing green products, the extent of green was addressed through declaration from manufacturers or labelling from other countries which in most of the cases does not suit the Indian context & requirements. However, with the launch of GreenPro Certification, green products, equipment & technologies can be certified within the country.

CII estimates that the market potential for certified green products would be about $300 billion by 2025. GreenPro is designed to certify products like- glass, paints, cement insulation, adhesives, sealants, construction blocks, house keeping chemicals, products with recycled content and many industrial & consumer products.

Mr Parasu Raman R, Chairman, Green Products & Services Council & Founding Chairman, IGBC said "Launching of GreenPro is a significant milestone for India. GreenPro will facilitate Indian industry to come up with innovations in green products and enable India to emerge as a global leader in green businesses."

Mr Suresh Sugavanam, Managing Director and Vice President of UL South Asia said, "We are excited to partner with CII in this initiative. One of our recent studies indicated that the Indian consumer is starting to get aware of green products. Through this partnership we bring our global experience in developing standards and running such programs. That helps further the cause of the Indian industry and the consumer to be green."
