The World Bank has mooted a proposal which is being actively considered by the Cabinet to help produce super efficient energy equipment. Under the programme, the Centre will provide Rs. 100 crore to supplement the Rs. 250 crore from the WB. The money will be used to incentivize manufacturers of appliances like ceiling fans, refrigerators and airconditioners to make products

It is in the very advanced stage and the programme is likely to be launched soon. It is a WB aided proposal of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Welcoming this proposal, the industry called for a quick roll out of the programme and its extension to other electrical appliances as it will help slash consumers power bill considerably. At present, lamps and ceiling fans account for more than half of electricity consumed by all electric appliances. Several appliance makers are looking at super efficient technologies and this move by BEE through WB support will be in the larger interest for the country.
