“Although the plot development plan called for three side open planning, we convinced the owner to come up with all four side open plan. This allows for unrestricted views from all sides. The plan is spread out with the movement / staircase at the center. A large living room with ample natural light and views to the outside are some of the design solutions that we gave the house.”

Located at Pine Drive Malibu Town, a posh colony on Sohna Road, Gurgoan, the house has a lawn in the front and back of the house, spacious and airy rooms with windows that cover 25% of the floor area for cross ventilation, a skylight in the lobby with a central dome, and a kitchen overlooking the kitchen garden, and a gazebo. These are just a few outstanding features of this house.

The west side walls have smaller openings insulated with thermocol. This added to an additional cost of `1 lakh. The façade has a unique roof hang over 4 feet wide, supported on three slender columns and cantilevered. This created a small sunshade effect. A long continuous balcony on the front also acts as a shade over the living room. And the upper bedroom is shaded with a roof projection.

The large overhang provides a sunshade on the façade, and prevents internal heat from building up. Continuous bands of chajja on the east side of the building give shade and elevation. The casting of the central dome in cow dung and half of the dome in ferrocrete, instead of the more expensive shuttering, is an example of the green features of the house, as is the landscaping with paver tiles and local plants, rainwater harvesting, and use of waste / recycled water for construction.

Sustainablity has been achieved through several measures, for instance, the terrace has brick bat waterproofing with a layer of tape crete (an acrylic-based polymer); all the water tanks and the piping systems have water-efficient fittings; the Otis elevator has a regenerative driver and a suitable converter unit for energy efficiency; freshly made bricks were bought from across the Yamuna, and Tata Steel was used for reinforcement.
