Wanzara Bungalow

Architect and interior designer firm Sunil Patil & Associates has designed the Wanzare Bungalow in Pune to accommodate three generations of a family living together.

The Wanzara Bungalow, build on a plot of 373.90 sq.m, was decided to go G +2.This lovely abode consists of 5 bedrooms, kitchen, lobby, dining, walkout into the garden from the dining and living and a courtyard. The exterior design is a geometric interplay of simple lines with sidings on wall and grey reflective glass used as part of the façade. The glass used on the second floor is UV-proof that protects the interiors against radiation.

Planning has been kept simple. This contemporary design maximizes space ensuring privacy and provides ample opportunity to connect with the outdoors. The triple heighted courtyard that runs from ground to top with an atrium on it, plays a vital role in giving light and ventilation and allowing interaction amongst all levels. The courtyard is a composition of a water body, a frangipani tree and a pebble court. The courtyard creates a backdrop for the custom-made mural created by an artist in brushed metal and rustic wood, and is visible from almost all the rooms at all levels.

The stone clad wall separates the living and the parents' bedroom. Openings on the north side allow sufficient ventilation into the house. The use of white and beige color breaks the monotony of the wooden and ceramic flooring.

The Pooja room with glass walls gives a view of the water body outside, adding to the sacred ambience of the place. The ultra modern kitchen with island, suspended decorative chimney over the table top, and matt finish grey ceramic flooring, opens into the dining room, and along with the living room, creates interactive spaces.

On the first floor are the master and the children bedrooms, and the family lounge, all of which share the courtyard that creates an interesting buffer space. The north facing children bedroom has defused natural light coming in throughout the year, while a sky light creates a play of light and shadow during different times of the day.

The second floor houses 2 bedrooms, a Jacuzzi in one of the bedrooms and split level flooring. The unconventional design of the handrail in the staircase connecting the two floors gives a suspended effect to the staircase with steel cables.
